Cars were always a subject matter for Gartel as it represented time and place in our pop culture. Today through custom software Gartel continues his manipulations and creations of automobiles. They still resonate a unique aesthetic though the technology allows for far advanced imaging. It is like bringing the future into the now projecting what is to come. There is both surrealism and a science fiction sensibility about these new works. If we are to be in the present, we always focus on the future, as mankind evolves. Masters of any medium have stood the test of time. Their works

Laurence Gartel is known as the father of digital art. His works have been displayed in many places, including the Museum of Modern Art, but thankfully for the automotive world, one of his favorite canvases is cars. He’s created art wraps for everything from a Rolls-Royce to a Tesla, and this weekend his two latest pieces reach back using classic cars to represent classic American life. Last night, the hangar party that kicked off the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance was also the premiere for two new Gartel art cars. SXLiquors, makers of Sexier brand spirits, gave Gartel a 1957 Lincoln Premiere Convertible and a 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine. He used the style of these chrome kings as a backdrop to visually other milestone in the era from which they came.
The Caddy is used to showcase three important events in the 1959. The space race heats up, Castro’s rise in Cuba, and Hawaii becoming the 50th state. This is life in 1959, and it is represented on this digital art piece with everything from tiki torches to spacemen.
The Lincoln carries a bit more of the liquor company’s theme as the tail fins include visuals of cocktails (don’t drink and drive.) Of course where there is liquor, there are women, and the Lincoln also carries examples of 1950's style sex on wheels. Possibly what ties this theme together the best is the quote that runs across the hood, “Making the world Sexier one sip at a time.”

Boca Raton, Florida (PRWEB) February 22, 2012 : SXLiquors, a fast-growing company headquartered in Fort Lauderdale that infuses its Latin spirits with sensual and exotic ingredients to make the world’s sexiest cocktails, is set to unveil a pair of art concept cars at the prestigious Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance. A lavender 1957 Lincoln Premiere Convertible and a 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine will be displayed on February 24 at 6:00 p.m. at the DuPont Registry Live Hangar Party taking place at the Boca Raton Airport, which is being sponsored by SXLiquors.
The two classic vehicles have been transformed into rolling canvases, their bodies covered completely with incredible, vibrant art that captures the energy, history and passion of South Florida embodied by SX. The art concept cars are the creation of renowned artist Laurence Gartel, who is regarded as the father of the digital art medium.
“Laurence Gartel’s passion for the cutting edge is what led me to commission him to create these amazing vehicles and to help launch the SXLiquors brand,” said SXLiquors CEO David Knight. “We challenged him to create ‘period cars’ that exude the excitement and Miami cool that define SXLiquors, and he certainly delivered.”
Gartel, whose work appeared in the Museum of Modern Art before his 25th birthday, and whose designs have graced the covers of leading magazines including Forbes, has described the cars as “history lessons” whose imagery contains iconic images tied directly to the years they were manufactured.
“On the 1959 Cadillac I depict the space race against the former Soviet Union as well as Castro’s influence and the addition of Hawaii as America’s 50th state,” said Gartel. “The tiki and Polynesian themes became a lasting trend, but their roots were in 1959, so you can see them throughout the design.”
Gartel added that the designs on the cars are intrinsically linked to Florida, which is the home of SXLiquors. “The SXLiquors brand brings back the feel good spirit of a lost era,” said Gartel. “I was sensitive to the brand’s mission and wanted to deliver their voice through the cars. They are a complete synergy of time, space and mind.”
From its start SXLiquors has embraced artistic design, fashion and style as core elements of the company. SX sponsored a charitable event at Miami’s Art Basel in December 2011 that had 17 South Florida artists paint bottles of its tequila and rum. The proceeds from an auction of those pieces were used to support breast cancer research. SXLiquors’ spirits are delivered in striking glass bottles which evoke the female form. The bottles have received awards for design, while the smooth and memorable spirits inside have won acclaim at national competitions for their taste.
Earlier this week SX announced that it was expanding its footprint from 80 test markets in South Florida to nearly 1,000 distribution points all across the state in cooperation with Miami-based and highly-regarded Southern Wine and Spirits. SXLiquors also plans to enter select international markets and is set to unveil a new product line in March at the Nightclub & Bar Convention and Tradeshow in Las Vegas. SX spirits will be introduced next in Nevada, where the brand’s sexy products are expected to resonate in the clubs and bars of Las Vegas. http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/2/prweb9218117.htm

GARTEL MERCEDES ART CAR
Handpainted Exterior/Interior, 1971 Mercedes 300 SEL
High Speed Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZDilgHnupY
I started creating the Mercedes Art Car in March 2011. It was my first "hand-painted" object in 30-years. As the "FATHER" of Digital Art for over three decades, it was a true challenge and interesting assignment to go back to my early roots and work with traditional media. My formal training dates back to the Pels School of Art located on the second floor at 73rd Street and Broadway) at the old Ansonia Hotel, at 9 years old. (Website provided here on the historical bldg: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ansonia The school was created by Albert Pels. http://www.aspireauctions.com/artist690-Albert-Pels.html It was from there that I built my portfolio and got a scholarship to go to the High School of
Music & Art (Noted by everyone in the world as the Fame High School) http://en.wikipedia.org wiki/Fiorello_H._LaGuardia_High_School

Gartel Ferrari Scuderia 430
WIRED MAGAZINE: http://www.wired.com/autopia/2011/03/cars-as-canvas-f430-scuderia-laurence-gartel-edition/
When BMW commissioned Alexander Calder to paint a 3.0 CSL back in 1975, it may have been just as revolutionary an act as when an ancient Roman first saw a block of marble and decided to pay someone else to carve a statue.
Since then, countless artists on commission have turned a car into a canvas, from slick Smart cars in Berlin to reimagined Minis in Switzerland.
This Ferrari F430 Scuderia was already a work of art before it got a new paintjob courtesy of Laurence Gartel, the godfather of digital art. You may remember Gartel’s work on a Tesla Roadster for Art Basel Miami, which provided a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the creeping influence of digital technology on both art and the automobile — and some pretty cool swirly colors.
The commission for the Scud came from Artfellas, a social networking site for visual artists. Gartel, who claims to have taught Andy Warhol how to use an Amiga, joked that the newly-wrapped exotic was perfect for those who feel it’s “not enough to just own a Ferrari.” Apparently, supercar consumption isn’t conspicuous enough for some folks.
The folks at Artfellas also make a good point about resale value: If you’re investing in fine art and hoping for a record-breaking sale at Barrett-Jackson, might as well combine your two passions for a one-shot profit. Commissions are encouraged, of course.
While we cringe at the thought of art for money’s sake, the actual product is best viewed with a dose of New Criticism, and without the baggage of its financial context. After all, there may never have been a Renaissance if the Medici family hadn’t wanted to flaunt it.
Just a word to any future art-supercar owners: keep them in your own garages at night, but make sure the rest of us get a chance to see them, too.
