Silks
For several years I designed men's silk neck ties. My grandfather had a great collection of ties and so did my dad. Both were extremely dapper men and loved to dress. My dad being in construction walked around most of the day with concrete and plaster on his body. Sometimes his face was full of paint as he was a very hard worker. On the weekends my father would love to dress up. Even if he was going to the flee market or just to take a drive for a Sunday dinner. He always wore magnificent clothes. He would shop at Bloomingdales or other fine stores on Madison Avenue. He loved a deal but he would buy out a store. For instance he would go into Maude Frizon and ask them what kind of styles did the shoes come in? They would say, "Blue suede, snakeskin, red leather." My dad would reply, "Let me have them all." Twenty five years ago these shoes were over $500 each. Today they would be close to $2000 in comparative market value. He never wore half the things he bought but he liked the idea of shopping and being able to pay for them. Maybe it's because he grew up very poor. What it did for me though is to say, Claude Montana or Theirry Mugler had nothing over his son when it came to design. I could do anything creative I put my mind to. I could design anything. So I set out later on to design my own collection of neckwear, and I did so for the MBP Neckwear company out of New York. We had a great run selling ties to Dayton Hudson and Marshall Fields. We would sell to little boutique stores all over the world as well. As I said, it was a good run for several years. I still wear my Christmas tie and my New Year's Eve tie whenever I can member.
