SX Liquors, makers of Sexier brand spirits, gave Gartel a 1957 Lincoln Premiere Convertible & a 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine. He used the style of these chrome kings as a backdrop to visually other milestone in the era from which they came. The Caddy showcases three important events in the 1959. The space race heats up, Castro’s rise in Cuba, & Hawaii becoming the 50th state. Life in 1959 is represented on this digital art piece with everything from tiki torches to spacemen. The Lincoln carries more of the liquor company’s theme as the tail fins include visuals of cocktails (don’t drink and drive.) Of course where there is liquor, there are women, and the Lincoln also carries examples of 1950's style sex on wheels. The quote that runs across the hood, “Making the world Sexier one sip at a time”, ties the theme together.

Unveiling Concept Cars at Boca Raton Concours d'Elegance 2012
South Florida's SXLiquors Unveiled Laurence Gartel Art Concept Cars at the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance - The classic vehicles have been transformed into rolling canvases, their bodies covered completely with incredible, vibrant art that captures the energy, history and passion of South Florida embodied by SX. The art concept cars are the creation of renowned artist Laurence Gartel, regarded as the father of the digital art medium.
A lavender 1957 Lincoln Premiere Convertible and a 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine were displayed on February 24 at 6:00 p.m. at the DuPont Registry Live Hangar Party taking place at the Boca Raton Airport, sponsored by SXLiquors.
The two classic vehicles were transformed into rolling canvases, their bodies covered completely with incredible, vibrant art that captures the energy, history and passion of South Florida embodied by SX. “Laurence Gartel’s passion for the cutting edge is what led me to commission him to create these amazing vehicles and to help launch the SXLiquors brand,” said SXLiquors CEO David Knight. “We challenged him to create ‘period cars’ that exude the excitement and Miami cool that define SXLiquors, and he certainly delivered.”
Gartel, whose work appeared in the Museum of Modern Art before his 25th birthday, and whose designs have graced the covers of leading magazines including Forbes, has described the cars as “history lessons” whose imagery contains iconic images tied directly to the years they were manufactured. “On the 1959 Cadillac I depict the space race against the former Soviet Union as well as Castro’s influence and the addition of Hawaii as America’s 50th state,” said Gartel. “The tiki and Polynesian themes became a lasting trend, but their roots were in 1959, so you can see them throughout the design.” Gartel added that the designs on the cars are intrinsically linked to Florida, which is the home of SXLiquors. “The SXLiquors brand brings back the feel good spirit of a lost era,” said Gartel. “I was sensitive to the brand’s mission and wanted to deliver their voice through the cars. They are a complete synergy of time, space and mind.” http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/2/prweb9218117.htm

GARTEL: ART BASEL MIAMI event at Bang & Olufsen, Dec. 2, 2011
GARTEL's ART BASEL MIAMI 2011 partnership with Bang & Olufsen, a Danish-founded audio-visual company, led to fantastic original works inspired by the creative interaction of sight and sound. In the 1920s, Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen were technological pioneers in sound recording and signal transmission, much like GARTEL followed as a 1970s pioneer of the digital era of art.
B&O products are known for distinctive design, compared to mainstream rivals, because they hire independent designers rather than employ them in the company. GARTEL is still "making waves," partnering for a unique Art Basel multimedia exhibition " CYMATICS" that continues for the rest of this season, making good use of B&O's supersized 3-D screens.
Laurence also unveils the GARTEL Rolls Royce "Themed 1989" Spirit. at the V.I.P. opening vernissage at Bang & Olufsen, 1691 Michigan Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida, Friday, December 2nd, 2011. 7PM-11PM. Exhibition continues through March 3, 2012; Closing Party March 2, 2012

This year Laurence Gartel’s Art Basel Miami 2011 presentation “Cymatics” takes place at Bang & Olufsen Miami Beach Showroom. The exhibit, which extends through March 3rd, 2012, includes fantastic original works inspired by the creative interaction of sight and sound. In the 1920s, Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen were technological pioneers in sound recording and signal transmission. Gartel followed as a 1970s multimedia pioneer of the Digital Art era. Be a part of the unveiling of Bang & Olufsen’s new Beovision 4-103 inch, 3-D High Definition, Plasma Television, valued at $130,000.00. Imagine feeling totally absorbed and a part of the action in your favorite 3D film. Bang & Olufsen will take you there with their new 3D technology. In addition to the video/animation, time based work, the impresario of Digital Media will have additional surprises; with the unveiling of his latest Rolls Royce “1989 Themed” Spirit art car. Art historian Pierre Restany once declared Gartel a “Fabulist,” in his Introduction to the Italian monograph, “Gartel: Arte e Tecnologia.” Mr Gartel will once again live up to that title. Coming off hosting the Star Gala and creating the official artwork for the event honoring John Secada the show should prove to be another stellar star event.

WELCOME TO MIAMI
Official LAURENCE GARTEL Museum
UPDATED: April 2012.
Still "State of the Art"
The Gartel Museum archives Laurence M. Gartel's pioneering contributions to the history of art, and Digital Fine Art (DFA), in particular. Gartel was digital before the PC hit home markets, before Photoshop, before the picture phone or tablet. Gartel wasn't only "State of the Art"; he virtually pioneered it for DFA.
Internationally reknown, Gartel's body of work is simply too large to include all milestones. This is a representative selection, with new additions and breaking news. The state of ART is not static; it is highly dynamic. New Media and killer apps arise everyday. If Gartel is "building a Mystery", he is including us in it, from handhelds, Skype mentoring, to Big Screen projects.
Accessible Art
Gartel is among those elite artists who make art history in their own time. From photo-safaris to racing Ferraris, he hosts, participates in and chronicles a wide variety of greater Miami area and NYC cultural events from haute to low brow. The "P.T. Barnum of the art world", his arenas include lifestyles, fine art and music, sports, to the unexpected. Super Cars and Art Cars are perennial favorites. Miami has some of the finest events in the Arts, Film, Music and Books. But GARTEL transcends Miami as an internationally acclaimed global artist with real-time and virtual exhibitions in the world's most prestigious art centers, from NYC and LA, to London, Rome, Paris, and Moscow.
Laurence Gartel is known around the world as the father of the digital imaging movement. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, Joan Whitney Payson Museum, Long Beach Museum of Art, Princeton Art Museum, The Norton Museum. Mr. Gartel’s art resides in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of American History, the Bibliotheque Nationale, and Victoria & Albert Museum. ABSOLUT GARTEL (for Absolut Vodka) is perhaps his most well known artwork, gracing the pages of “ART-IN-AMERICA,” “Artforum,” “Sothebys,” “Art and Auction,” “Art and Antiques,” “ArtByte,” “Scientific American,” “Technology Review,” “WIRED,” & “NY Magazine".
Conditioning the Eye of the Beholder
The function of art and the artist is to interpret reality from their own point of view, showing novel slices of reality that others might not get through their own eyes. As Klee said, "Art does not reproduce what is visible, it makes things visible." It shapes reality so we can move through its multiple layers. An idea, image or vision becomes manifest -- such as Gartel's prescient vision of the emerging medium of electronic art. For a time before it mainstreamed, the language of 'Ars Electronica' became the new esoterics. His early images were a window on the future. Like magic, it amazed and amused as his signature style revealed formerly unseen worlds, both programmed and transformed by human gestures and interventions. The creation of art became essentially a non-linear process. Today, it is far beyond the quest for the perfect print. It is about new ways of seeing -- of integrating media.
Gartel is a living exemplar of electronic prophet Marshall McLuhan's statement: "It is possible to deal with the entire environment as a work of art." It is a fusion of persona and placement in a sort of spiritual alchemy that transforms the cultural ground. It reveals that formerly hidden ground as the deep source of our inspiration and transformation. Gartel's arc personalizes and demonstrates the evolution of the digital revolution. From the early 1970s he worked with the technologies available alongside fellow experimenters such as Nam June Paik and Andy Warhol. From the beginning, video was part of his multimedia aesthetic that he has carried forward in image projections and Live Streaming. He still seeks the hidden, the mysterious, the wild. His art jumps off the wall into the world at large.
Like a digital Dali, Gartel quips, "To me, this is what makes it ART. It is as much theatre as it is anything else."
Artist / Impresario
Gartel remains a "strange attractor" in the transmedia world of art unseparated from its environs. The true medium of the leading edge artist is, therefore, the culture itself. Sponsors are the new art patrons. Aesthetic Arrest became the "WOW Factor", whether the subject is dream flesh, dream cars, dream tech, or the virtually unimaginable. Over the decades Gartel continued developing his high energy images in parallel to, and symbolic of developing technology and scientific boundary breaking, through multiple layers of simultaneous realities. Internationally known French art critic and cultural philosopher, Pierre Restany wrote in the Foreword to Gartel’s 1998 retrospective book, GARTEL: Arte & Tecnologia, that [Gartel's art is] “amalgamating the unlimited variety of differences in each existential microcosm of the human being."
"I turned to this medium because I knew that the future of art would be electronic -- I just had a vision," says Gartel of his decision to go digital. "And when I saw the potentials of manipulating an image using electronic means, I knew that the possibilities were endless and that nobody had created anything like this before."
Maestro Digitale
Within the digital medium, Gartel began experimenting with tools and techniques, which led to his "trademark" style of digital collage that mixes painting and photo manipulation -- a decade before corporate-produced software allowed others to do so, he points out. In those days the gear was much like a modular Moog or Buchla Synthesizer, banks of patchcords and endless knobs. Gartel generated and processed video much like synthesizers processed audio. Ultimately, both evolved from analog to digital processing.
Now in his master years, Gartel has captured well over a million images, some of which have appeared literally in millions of magazines.
"Anyone can do a collage today in Photoshop or some other program, but I did it decades ago prior to the availability of commercial painting and photo-manipulation software. At the time, there were no personal computers, no commercial hardware or software, no digital printers, no storage devices, and no digital cameras. So to capture an image, I had to throw a black cloth over my head and use a film camera on a tripod to photograph the monitor," Gartel explains. "I had to make sure that I would not get the refresh scan lines, so I had to photograph the screen at one-thirtieth of a second or less, and the final result was a 35mm transparency of whatever I created on the computer screen."

August 13, 2011. Shades of the hyper-reality of 'Bladerunner', and Gartel is already there, frequently shown in many urban areas. Augmented Reality (AR) is a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to the general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified by a computer. The technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality.
BBC just installed Big Screens in 20 cities across the UK. The London 2012 Organising Committee is a partner of the Big Screens. During 2012 the screens and the areas around them will become “Live Sites”. They will be the destination for live coverage, local content, news and events related to the Olympic and Paralympic games. These latest digital video displays measure twenty-five square metres on average, with a computer-controlled playout and audio system.
Each screen is customized to reflect life in its community with a broad range of local content, including events listings, events and partnerships with community, arts & media organisations. The Big Screens relay a combination of major broadcast events, news, sport, culture and music. There are also interactive facilities to allow the audience to text their comments, send photo-images to the screen or play interactive applications. Big screens and Jumbotron were pioneered in IMAX, Times Square, sports arenas, rock concerts casinos and cruise ships. With versatile inflatable screens, Big Screen Open Air Cinema is also here: highest quality inflatable movie screens and complete outdoor cinema systems engineered for private, commercial, and government use.

Hosted by Dolce Entertainment at Nikki Beach, The GARTEL Couture Premiere during Art Basel 2010 was a huge hit. Great vibe, wonderful people, great energy. I thank Bonnie McCabe for working day and night relentlessly on the GARTEL Collection of magnificent clothing. At the same time I unveiled the GARTEL Tesla Art Roadster. It caused such excitement on the streets of Miami that it immediately went viral on the internet, on over 40,000 websites.
Labeled the father of digital art, Laurence Gartel is known for his visually opulent and adventurous works of art on innovative materials. For the past 35 years, Gartel has devoted his life to digital art. He’s basked in commercial success and has had his work exhibited in prestigious art houses such as the MoMa, Smithsonian, PS 1, and the Whitney. But this year, he didn't come to Art Basel to show off his latest art piece, he was in town to promote his latest ventures in fashion and art cars.
Gartel's premier fashion show at Nikki Beach revealed a colorful collection of resort wear. Prints on silk and satin bring his trademark graphic designs from the museum wall to the street. The models strutted down the runway in © Sandra Silverstein / MFbGartel bikinis, dresses, skirts, and cover-ups in a mélange of psychedelic prints (such as a collage of Vegas images mixed with images of gummy bears and peppermint candies). For female fans of Gartel, these flowing art pieces are welcome wearable additions to their resort-wear collections.

NEVER A DULL MOMENT:
Artist, Host, Personality, Entrepreneur, Mentor
Gartel's visionary world is a global superposition of multiple simultaneous projects. Search in any language and you find numerous footprints from his activities. How does he do it? Well perhaps that is part of the genius of the digital Maestro, now in the golden era of his highly-saturated career.
But Gartel isn't resting on any laurels. An irrepressible extrovert, he is more inspired than ever, and surprising fans and collectors each and every day with his innovations. Recently Gartel actually returned to the brush, to the hand-gesture, proving he is not only a digital master, but a classical artist, as well. In all the projects he takes on, Gartel brings the sizzle and personality. The "WOW Factor" is a given, seen from his signature Gibson guitars, to commercial work, and exquisite prints.
His is an art that speaks directly to contemporary culture, sets trends and frequently anticipates them. He is as much a living part of the art as the objects and events he creates. In his world, the pulse of culture is always racing. In recent years he has explored digital alternatives in new materials, such as art glass and modern construction products, created arguably the world's first 3-D printed sculpture, and conquered the world of streaming video in a variety of leading-edge and sophisticated venues. In 2010, he even starred in the movie, "Charlie, the Three-Legged Dog".
Gartel's work has enhanced some of the greatest contemporary artists in music and film. He has produced fashion shows of his own fabrics and designs, and even "dressed" some of today's flashiest art cars in Gartel couture. For all this and more, the artworld breathlessly awaits his future offerings with great anticipation. Even he doesn't know what he'll do next.
So stay tuned for more surprises. Art Basel 2011 will surely break new ground. There is quite a surprise in store for everyone. Warm up your eyeballs and be there Dec. 2 to find out what it is.

TELEPRESENCE TEACHING
Virtual Appearances, Videoconferencing, & Skype Mentoring
View Gartel's studio screens in real-time interaction
With live streaming and telepresence, Gartel is pioneering distance teaching. Telepresence refers to a set of technologies which allow a person to feel as if they are present, to give the appearance that they are present, or to have an effect at a place other than their true location.
Telepresence requires that the users' senses be provided with such stimuli as to give the feeling of being in that other location. Additionally, users may be given the ability to affect the remote location. In this case, the user's position, movements, actions, voice, etc. may be sensed, transmitted and duplicated in the remote location to bring about this effect. Information may travel in both directions between the user and the remote location. Students in any environment can view GARTEL's screens from his studio, watch him work online in their educational setting and interact instantly.
“Education is very important,” says Gartel, “and thus the interaction between students and artist in real time is the ‘wave of the future.’ We can work even more closely as both parties have all their tools at their fingertips. "Students can send files, and get critiqued immediately, both in front of their peers and independently”. ‘Telepresence’ is an open architecture, acknowledges Gartel. It blows the doors off the studio and opens it to the world. He can show and tell as if he were right here in any city or multiple locales. “This is a dynamic interactive moment in art history,” asserts Gartel. “After 35-years there are still new horizons and vistas to establish. We are doing so, right here, right now.”
GARTEL is available by appointment via big screen for suitably equipped colleges and universities.

MIAMI AIRPORT Resurrection: Everything Old is New Again
South Beach, Miami is hot, hot, hot
& Gartel's images reflect that tropical palette and electric lifestyle.
Miami Airport Series is currently under restoration for a downtown installation.
Laurence Gartel graduated from the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 1977, and has pursued a graphic style of digital art since that time. His experiments with computers, starting in 1975, involved the use of some of the earliest special effects synthesizers, and early video paint programs. While most of the Pioneers at Digital Art Museum started with programming, Gartel entered the field at a point in time where it had become possible to manipulate real-world images on a computer. His oeuvre therefore represents both some of the earliest artistic experiments with this technology, and a continuum with the present day where the technology is now ubiquitous. Gartel's work, with its origins in video systems, has a strong relationship with video art and artists, including video art pioneer, Nam June Paik.

Great Works
Gartel's works can be described as unique collages, which tell a story. "Good artwork has a succinct message that is embedded within multiple views. Thus, each picture that I use is carefully chosen and carefully positioned," he states. "It is the placement that makes someone a true genius of storytelling. Situate an element in the wrong location or of the wrong size, and it sends a completely incorrect message. Or, if the collaged item is placed in an awkward location that doesn't make sense, the resulting piece is 'hard on the eyes,' as collage should have a flow, allowing so the viewer moves from one part of the picture to another. By looking at the overall image from a distance, the viewer should see a sea of color that takes the person on a visual journey."
So what makes Gartel's work so unique? As he states, his art has always been autobiographical, and includes people he has met and happenings he has experienced. He also includes personal artifacts from his travels. "I don't follow any particular style. So, I guess that is my style in a way," he says. "If you are living, traveling, reading, looking, observing, studying, thinking, and being emotional, then you have a good palette to work from. And I've traveled enough and deducted enough to have a library of stories in my head."
Moreover, Gartel's collages contain images of varied resolutions, textures, and surfaces. As a result, a person may not see everything in the image at first glance, encouraging the viewer to take another, closer look.
Gartel also describes his works as a complete evolution of the entire medium-another aspect that differentiates his works from those by other collage artists. "I have used practically every piece of hardware and software to come along, and have experimented with turnkey systems and those at research labs at the New York Institute of Technology and the Jet Propulsion Lab, for example. Some programs that I have used are no longer available, but if I would use them today, people would probably think the art was truly new in the sense that it doesn't resemble the signature look of current programs. And art should not look like software."
As Gartel notes, when the Page Curl effects were released years ago in Kai's Power Tools, the result was a programmed effect, not a piece of art. But everyone used it as such. "That's not art. And filters in Photoshop are not art, in and of themselves, unless they are massaged and managed into something that creates an emotional statement," he says.
Currently, Gartel uses a range of tools for his artistic endeavors: Illustrator, Painter, Photoshop, Amorphium, Bryce, and Poser/Shade. And, he is quick to point out that he enjoys using different versions of a program, "because there may be something in one that is not in another."
So what can the artist achieve through the computer that he cannot do through traditional means? "Everything," Gartel says. Then again, he also finds traditional mediums interesting-provided they inspire him. "Computer graphics allows a person to create images that no one has seen before, or it provides a unique perspective. People who create redundant images are not innovators."
According to Gartel, if someone is trying to create something "new" in print or in CG, it has probably been done before. Yet, the digital medium now has expanded so much and extends into so many genres and delivery systems that there is a wide array of options for today's CG artists. Digital filmmaking, for instance, allows for creative storytelling in unique ways. The editing process allows a person to create, fix, manipulate, and tell a story just the way the person envisions. Moreover, the advent of DVDs allows a person to create a work and project it on, say, the side of a building or Big Screens. "So much innovation can be done now," Gartel maintains.
