ABSOLUT GARTEL for Absolut Vodka circa 1991
ABSOLUT GARTEL commission for Absolut Vodka
Here it is. The signature piece. Perhaps the most noted, glamorized, and well recognized work I have ever created. It is the piece that defines our times and done with the most cutting edge technology back in 1991. I utilized Photoshop 2.0 and Canon's first still video camera, the Canon 760. The file size was 640 x 480 and cost approximately $10,000. The image was realized as a digital file to 4" x 5" transparency and printed as a Cibachrome print for the Absolut Collection. Lots of interesting foot notes to all this as the Canon camera would be considered a dinosaur, and Cibachrome as a printing technology does not really exist anymore. Imaging to film has also taken a side line. So truly the only thing that really exists anymore is the Digital Image itself. It just shows you how obsolescence is built into our society. ART is FOREVER I always say, and it holds up to be the truth.
People often ask, how did they approve the image for publication and distribution when the bottle is so pixelated and out of focus. You cannot read the label? - My reply remains the same, "If you drink enough vodka, that is what the bottle starts to look like!" ABSOLUT GARTEL remains one of the longest running ads in the history of the campaign from 1991 - 2001. An ad running 10 years is almost unthinkable. ABSOLUT GARTEL has appeared on the pages of: "Art-In-America," "Artforum," "Sotheby's Preview," "Art and Auction," "Art & Antiques," "Scientific American," "ArtByte," "WIRED" and "New York Magazine" to name a few.
ABSOLUT GARTEL is also included in ABSOLUT BOOK by Richard Lewis. (A dear friend indeed.) None of this would have happened however, without the approval of then CEO of Carillon Importers, Michel Roux, the architect beyond the entire ABSOLUT Vodka campaign. Michel was the one who gave me the commission and chose from the four works that I produced to be the one that would eventually beome the iconic image for all times.

GARTEL LOVES COKE - The Drink
In 1996 I was commissioned by Coca Cola to create artwork that they then turned over to their worldwide licensees that turned my art into their product line. I was asked or shall I say paid to produce four works. The are all great pieces but the "FLAME" bottle stands out the most. It is iconic. The artwork was made for the Atlanta Olympics.
